How To Be Spiritually Minded

Mike Mahaffey

Being spiritually minded does not happen by accident. You do not drift into it and it does not develop overnight. You choose it — deliberately, consistently, every single day.

Every day you decide what leads you — your flesh or your spirit. The world pulls hard on your mind through noise, distraction, and the constant pressure of circumstances. But if you are a believer, you were not made to live from the outside in. You were made to live from the inside out — from the Spirit of God dwelling in you.

That is what it means to be spiritually minded.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (Romans 8:6)

Life and peace. That is what waits on the other side of a spiritually minded life. Not as a distant reward but as a present reality available to you right now.

Set Your Affection in the Right Place

You cannot be spiritually minded while your heart is still tangled up in the things of this world. Scripture does not suggest this — it commands it.

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:2)

What are you loving? What are you chasing? If your affections are set on comfort, money, approval, or anything else this world offers, you are aiming too low. Spiritually minded people lift their eyes. They train their heart to care more about eternity than the temporary, more about Christ than convenience. That does not mean withdrawing from ordinary life — it means putting things in their proper order with Jesus at the top.

Feed Your Spirit

What you feed will grow. Feed the flesh consistently and it will dominate your thinking, your reactions, and your choices. Feed your spirit through Scripture, worship, and time alone with God — and watch what changes.

You cannot walk in the Spirit while giving your flesh three full meals a day and your spirit almost nothing. The imbalance will show up in your thoughts, your attitudes, and your ability to hear God’s voice. Spiritual mindedness is built through what you consistently take in.

Meditate on the Word Until It Owns You

Reading the Bible is not enough on its own. The spiritually minded believer soaks in Scripture — stops, reflects, prays over it, returns to it throughout the day. The goal is not information. It is transformation.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. (Psalm 1:2)

When the Word is rooted deeply in you it begins to shape how you think, speak, and respond to everything life brings. That reshaping is the mark of a spiritually minded life — not perfection, but a mind that has been genuinely re-formed by truth.

Choose the Spirit Over Your Feelings

Your emotions are loud. The Holy Spirit often whispers. When anger flares, when fear grips, when temptation knocks — there is always a choice. The difficulty is remembering that the choice exists in the moment when feelings are running high.

That is why Scripture has to be in you before the moment arrives. Meditating on these verses outside of emotional pressure is what makes them available when the pressure hits.

He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. (Proverbs 25:28)

When your emotions run unchecked your defenses are gone — you are wide open to attack. But when you walk in the Spirit He builds those walls back up. You become steady, guarded, not swayed by every feeling that blows through.

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Every racing thought, every emotion that surges — you take it captive. You hold it up to the truth and ask whether it aligns with what Jesus says. If it does not, it goes.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16)

This is not about being perfect. It is about walking close enough to hear His voice and humble enough to obey when He speaks.

Stay Battle Ready

A spiritually minded believer is dangerous to the enemy. That is exactly why the enemy works to keep your mind cluttered, distracted, anxious, and carnal. He knows what you are capable of when your mind is set on things above.

Put on the whole armor of God and keep the sword of the Spirit sharp. Do not just know the truth — declare it, stand on it, and live it out in the open. Spiritual mindedness is not a private internal state. It expresses itself in how you move through the world.

Talk With God All Day

Spiritually minded people do not keep God confined to a corner of their morning. He is in the center of the entire day. They pray while working, while driving, while facing a difficult decision or a difficult person.

No formal setting is required. Talk to God throughout your day — tell Him what is on your heart, ask for help in the moment you need it, thank Him for grace, cry out when it hurts, and listen when He speaks. That ongoing conversation is what walking in step with the Spirit actually looks like in practice.

Walk With People Who Stir Your Spirit

You become like the people you stay closest to. The people around you are either pushing you closer to Jesus or pulling you further from Him — there is rarely a neutral influence.

Spiritually minded people need fellowship with others who are genuinely hungry for God, grounded in truth, and unashamed to follow Christ with everything they have. That kind of community does not just encourage you — it sharpens you, holds you accountable, and reminds you what you are living for.

A Daily Pattern for Spiritual Mindedness

Developing a spiritually minded life requires a consistent daily rhythm — not a rigid formula, but a heart posture practiced over time.

Begin each day with surrender before anything else demands your attention. Give the day to God before the world gets its claim on it. Open the Word and read slowly — even a single verse read with genuine attention does more than a chapter skimmed out of obligation. Let Scripture breathe life into you before you step into the demands of the day.

Keep the conversation with God going through every hour. Short honest prayers throughout the day are how you stay in step with the Spirit rather than drifting back into the flesh. Guard what you allow your mind to consume — what goes in will either feed your spirit or stir your flesh, and that choice accumulates over time.

End each day with honest reflection. Ask where you obeyed, where you fell short, and ask God to make you more like Jesus tomorrow than you were today.

This is not a checklist. It is a way of living that says you do not want to merely survive — you want to walk in the Spirit, think like the Spirit, and live like you belong to another kingdom.

You do. So set your mind there.
